          Preschool
          Education : History

Preschool Education in this country is started since year 1950. By
that time, preschool was influenced by the British education system
where it was more exclusive and the opportunities just opened to those
wealthy families. From year 1950 until 1960, kindergarten in Malaysia
was found by the Christian societies as part of their church
activities. Almost all of the preschools which are own by individual
or private agencies are located at urban and provide early education
for those children whose parent are able to afford the educational
fees. As a result, only part of the children age flowed within 4-6
years old have this opportunity to attend the classes held by those
preschools. Unfortunately there were a lot of children which came from
poor families and rural area unable to gain the early education in
          kindergarten

A revolution was occur in year 1969, Asia Foundation had contributed
amount of money to the Worker Society of Malaysia to afford the
development capital of preschool model institution which more similar
to the ˇ°Headstartˇ± project in America. Kampung Muniandy, Kampung
Manggis and Kampung Sentosa in Selangor had been chosen and children
from many races such as Malay, Chinese and Indian which came from poor
families were the main target of this project. A survey had been taken
in America indicated that children who attended this project had
achieved good performance in academic and attitude if compared with
those children who never attended this project before. Based on the
report from ˇ°Kajian Keciciran 1973(Ee Ah Meng, 1988)ˇ±, there was
positive correlation within children attendance in preschool and
performance. Ninety percent of the children who attended the
kindergarten are placed in express class when entered the primary
          school.
